Acts 16:30 “….Sirs what must I do to be saved?”

On a number of occasions over the past couple of weeks,I have driven by a denominational church that has a sign posted by the roadside that says: “Free Trip To Heaven, Details Inside”. This sign jump started my thinking process. It is absurd to think and teach that there will be no cost to be paid as we seek a home in heaven one day. Churches are in a mad rush to see which one can make obeying God the easiest. God’s way to heaven is conditional. Condition one is to hear (Rom. 10:17, James 1:21). Condition number two is to believe (Heb. 11:6, John 3:36, 1 John 5:10, Mk. 16:16). Condition number three is to repent (Luke 13:3, Acts 17:30, Acts 2:38). Condition number four is to confess (Matt. 10:32, Rom. 10:9-10, Acts 8:37). Condition number five is to be baptized (Acts 2:38, Mk. 16:16, Acts 22:16, 1 Pet. 3:21, Gal. 3:27). Condition number six is to live faithful until death (Rev. 2:10, 2 Tim. 4:6-8). These are God’s conditions, not mine or yours or those of any human man, they are conditions set by God. Unless these conditions are followed, there will be no trip to heaven at all. I suppose that a church that offers a free trip to heaven will be a popular church but that way will be in opposition to God’s way.

No where in God’s word can you find a promise that our journey to heaven will be easy and free. The promise is that if we obey him, it will be a safe one. Make no mistake, there is a cost involved in traveling the road to heaven. To begin with, in order to walk on the road to heaven, you must have the desire to do so more than you want anything else. (Matt. 6:33, Mk. 12:30, Phil 3:13-14). There must be a desire to know the truth and a willingness to obey that truth (John 8:32, John 17:17, 1 Pet. 4:17, Heb. 5:8-9, 2 Thess. 1:7-9).Getting to heaven will not happen as a result of wishful thinking (James 1:21).

Getting to heaven is going to cost a total commitment to our Lord (Rom. 12:1). If we present our bodies as a living sacrifice we must let God have full possession, we must yield every member to him and his word will always mold our thoughts and guide our lives. Anyone who doesn’t believe this will be costly is sadly mistaken. This kind of life is one of self denial (Matt. 16:24). It is a life that exposes an individual to the taunts and threats of others because they stand fast in the faith and refuse to run to the same excess of riot that others engage in (1 Cor. 16:13, Phil. 1:27, 1 Thess. 3:8, 1 Pet. 4:4). It is a life in which we must fight the good fight of faith and continually buffet ourselves lest we fall (1 Tim. 6:12, Matt.. 5:16, 1 Cor. 15:57, Gal. 6:10, Eph. 4:24-32, 1 Pet. 2:1-2, 2 Tim. 2:15). It is a life in which the world or the things of the world must not be allowed to interfere  with service to God (Lk. 12:15, Jas. 4:4, 1 John 2:15-17, Matt. 6:19-21).
