I will build my church (Matthew 16:18)

Many years ago Jesus said He would build His church.  This promise is recorded in Matthew 16:18 and it is expressed with these words:

And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

As people read through the New Testament they find many references to the word “church.”  In several of these passages the word church is associated with a description (“church of the firstborn,” “church of God,” etc.).  The church is also symbolized by figures of speech such as a “body,” “temple,” and a “flock.”  The members of a local congregation are also described in various ways.  Terms such as “disciples,” “Christians,” “saints,” and even “priests” (1 Pet. 2:5, 9) are used to describe God’s people.
