Our love is like this ship

“Putting Together A Proposal”

Stephen Dempsey knows how to wow his woman. His technique may not work for every fair maiden, but those who are fans of “Star Wars” will be green with envy after hearing how he proposed marriage to his girlfriend, Amanda.

Using Lego building blocks, Dempsey put together a model of the Imperial-II class Star Destroyer, a space ship well known to fans of the “Star Wars” movies. When Amanda opened the ship, there was Darth Vader holding an engagement ring. To further seal the deal, Dempsey said this: “Our love is like this ship,” he told Amanda. “Its shields defend from any outside force wanting to get in and destroy us.”

Amanda said Yes, and the couple plan to use the opening musical score from “Star Wars” when they are announced as husband and wife. (To see photos of Dempsey’s creation, go to http://mashable.com/2014/12/09/lego-star-wars-proposal/.)

As a minister of the Gospel, I’ve officiated many weddings. Every one of them has been unique in some way, though I’ve never performed a Star Wars-themed wedding. But I have to admit I like Dempsey’s image of love as a shield.

So why don’t we hear the wisdom from our body? First of all the head is so dominant with. God’s word gives the best advice for building durable and happy marriages. That shouldn’t surprise us, since God is the original Designer of marriage. After noting that “It is not good that man should be alone,” God created Eve and presented her to Adam (Genesis 2:18-22). This observation is then given about marriage: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). The Hebrew word for “joined” means “cling” – a tight bond.

Centuries later, the apostle Paul gave inspired guidance to husbands everywhere: “So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church” (Ephesians 5:28,29).

Love is indeed a powerful bonding agent. In another letter, Paul said this about agape – love: “But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection” (Colossians 3:14). Many forces do indeed assault marriages today, and a large percentage of these unions don’t survive. But wives and husbands who practice agape love erect a shield which – with God’s help – will deflect any attack.

Putting together a proposal using Lego blocks is beyond my ability, but that would actually be an easy task when compared with putting together a lasting marriage. For that difficult challenge, we need God’s guidance and help!
