First, don’t be a complainer or a grumbler! Especially when it comes to God’s words (which is the context of Philippians 2). That does not mean that you have to accept everything that is said and done without offering criticism. Nothing would ever improve if we never offered criticism! But change the things you can and don’t grumble and complain about things you cannot change.
Secondly, live a blameless and innocent life, one that is above reproach. If you want to live a defiant joy, live a Christian life to the best of your ability.
Thirdly, live as a light in this very dark world. Darkness cannot overcome light. The smallest light can be seen in the deepest darkness. Be that light in your sphere of influence. You are the only gospel many people will see.
Fourthly, hold fast to the word of life. This would refer both to Jesus and to His teachings. Hold tightly. Satan wants to see some separation between us and Jesus’ teachings. If he does, he will take advantage of that separation and will drive a further wedge.
Fifthly, as with the apostle Paul, pour out your life as a drink offering in the service of others. We want to take as many people to heaven as we can and that involves serving others.
Sixthly, find your “kindred spirit.” We all need Christian fellowship and we all need the “Peter, James, and John” in our lives as Jesus did. That is, those Christians who are the closest to us who will always encourage us.
Seventhly, be concerned about the welfare of others. Show them your concern and speak of your concern.
Eighthly, seek the interests of Christ. What is important to Him is what is most important. If you involve yourself in what is most important, everything else – the things that steal our joy – pale into insignificance.
Ninthly, make sure your outward behavior matches your inward convictions. In other words, have character. Don’t get your pattern of behavior from TV or your friends! Pattern your character after Jesus.
Tenthly, be more concerned about the things of Jesus and His truth and be less concerned about your physical life. Spiritual matters are what will last beyond this life.
