Luke 6:46 “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”

This is a most thought provoking, soul searching question. A companion to this question by Jesus is found in Matthew 7:21 where we hear Jesus say, “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven”.  I know that there are a number of lessons that we can learn from a close examination of these two passages—Luke 6:46 and Matthew 7:21. It seems to this writer that one of those lessons would of a certainty make application to the false idea that God does not want, require or demand us to obey completely and fully his will in order to be saved eternally (2Thess. 1:7-10). It is imperative that we take note of the fact that simply saying, “I believe”, is totally insufficient (Matt. 15:7-9).

Vast numbers of people throughout this world claim to believe in and follow God. In these United States of America there are millions of people who make the same claim. Yet, most of these people refuse to accept God’s word as their only guide. They turn to their Standard Manual, their Discipline, their Confession of Faith, their Key of Scripture or some other creed book written by uninspired men to support what they believe and practice. This in spite of the fact that Paul tells us that the word of God is given by inspiration and it is all we need (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Peter tells us that we have been given all things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3). In not one of these creeds authored by man will you find God’s plan of salvation as revealed in the Bible, his word (Rom. 10:17, Mk. 16:16, Acts 2:38, Rom. 10:9-10, Acts 8:35-38, 1 Pet. 3:21, Rev. 2:10). To be sure, they will contain “bits and pieces” of that plan but understand this, “bits and pieces” will not save eternally (Phil. 2:12, 2 Thess. 1:7-9, 2 John 6-11).

Now, this is not just a one way street because those of us who claim to be following God’s word need to be very careful that we do not become guilty of only accepting “bits and pieces” of God’s word. Many say “Lord, Lord” then forsake the worship assembly (Heb. 10:24-25). Many say, “Lord, Lord” then when in the assembly refuse to participate by singing praises (Col. 3:16) or perhaps they do sing but without the understanding of what they are singing (1 Cor. 14:15). Some may say “Lord, Lord” but then refuse to give as they have truly been prospered (1 Cor. 16:1, 2 Cor. 9:6-7). Lots of folks say “Lord, Lord” then refuse to work in his vineyard (1 Cor. 15:58, 2 Tim. 2:15, 21, James 1:25). Some will say “Lord, Lord” then permit foul language, cursing, as well as those slang words used to substitute for the actual curse words, to flow from their mouth (James 3:9-12, Eph. 4:25, 29). Sadly, some will say “Lord, Lord” then not have brotherly love in their heart (1 Pet. 1:22, 1 John 3:14-18, 1 John 4:7, 20-21).

Of a truth, we, as well as all of mankind, need to acknowledge Jesus as Lord but we must understand what it means when we so do.
